Tami Jo Urban

A fine artist to the core, I have devoted my life to the craft. Art is my voice to express what otherwise goes unsaid. The satisfaction when I capture a moment in time or caress the contours with light breathes life into the artist as well as canvas. This world on paper is mine as I see it, a world that reacts and adapts to my twisted musings. My work continues to shape and be shaped by my evolution. Each piece unveils more corners of this paper world. Through it all, I’m starting to think there’s a devil here inside.

Tami Jo Urban, MFA

Born in Detroit, Michigan, as a child I spent most of my time drawing and painting. At age 7 local artist Nancy Salvador took me under her wing and fostered my artistic development. In 1992 I gained a second creative mentor, Melvin Earl McElhiney. Art and science was my focus as she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Wayne State University in 1996 and my Master of Fine Arts in Medical and Biological Illustration from the University of Michigan in 1999.

I worked as an art Instructor at the St. Clair Shores Adult and Community Education Program and gallery associate at Posterity Gallery while attending college. My big-girl career began as an Art Director & Illustrator at General Motors leading me to Web Developer at Campbell-Ewald and eventually Creative Director of Environmental Graphics at JGA.

In September of 2007, I resigned from JGA to open Time is carving tattoo studio in an office space with chiropractor and best friend Stacy Corrado. We call our union Art of Skin & Bones. Now stationed in Miami Beach, I am in my freelance studio Tamityville working projects that range from commercial art and illustration to web and social media development. April 2011, my kung-fu and I were invited to join blu sol design, a reunion of former colleagues sharing a common mission to unleash our unbridled creativity to the world of retail environmental design and brand strategy.

I have exhibited in shows and galleries since elementary school. I’m a member of the Golden Key National Honor Society, Association of Medical Illustrators and National Tattoo Association. I’ve been published in Crain’s Detroit, Scholastic Magazine, 1,000 Retail Graphics, Here and Now: Emerging Artists in Michigan and Standing Tall.

I’m always accepting freelance projects. My commercial art, graphic/interior/environmental design and web development practices along with her specialization in medical, medical-legal and biological sciences allow her to provide a full-spectrum of creative services. I am, after all, a ninja.
